BWA Architecture was hired by the Cambridge Housing Authority (CHA) to design the modernization of the Truman Apartments, a 59-unit federally-assisted senior housing high-rise building in East Cambridge. BWA met with CHA Planning and Development staff and with input from property management, operations staff, and development maintenance personnel created design options for the one-bedroom units and common areas including: a community room, TV room, community kitchen, laundry facilities, computer room, and waiting areas. The overarching goal of the project is to leave the building in good stead for the next 25 years.
BWA Architecture achieved a high level of design aesthetics, despite a tight budget, and was able to transform the building into a beautiful and meaningful home for the elderly and disabled tenants. Although time constraints were very intense, the BWA team met the challenge with heavy involvement during the construction administration phase, providing weekly site visits to ensure the project remained on time and within budget.
